10 facts about Rio 2016 Paralympics

 

As Rio 2016 Paralympic Games came to an end, Brazil and the rest of the world said farewell to South America’s first Paralympics during the closing ceremony.

  1. As part of a formal agreement between the International Paralympic Committee and International Olympic Committee first established in 2001, the winner of the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics was also to host the 2016 Summer Paralympics.
  2. These were the 15th Summer Paralympic Games.
  3. Approximately 500 professional staff and 2,000 volunteers took part in the Rio 2016 Paralympics opening ceremony.
  4. More than 4,000 athletes represented 160 teams from around the world. Athletes competed for 528 medals in 22 different sports.
  5. Six countries have made their Paralympics debut including Aruba, Congo, Malawi, Somalia, Sao Tome and Principe, and Tongo.
  6. Around 50,000 tickets were available for the show.
  7. The theme for this year’s opening ceremony was “Every Body Has A Heart”. It was created by three directors: designer Fred Gelli, writer Marcel Rubens Paiva and artist Vik Muniz.
  8. Two new sports were introduced: canoe and triathlon.
  9. Barra da Tijuca hosted most of the Games venues, with the rest located in Copacabana Beach, Maracanã and Deodoro.
  10. China dominated this year’s Paralympics with 239 medals, including 107 golds.
