New extension plans for Natal’s light rail transit proposed

New extension plans for Natal's light rail

Brazilian Urban Trains Company (CBTU) has revealed proposals to expand the 56.2km diesel-operated light network in Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte, with the addition of a third line.

The 24km White Line would extend the metre-gauge system and run beyond the current terminal of the South Line located at Parnamirim to São José do Mipibu and Nísia Floresta.

The new extension project is estimated to cost 152 million Brazilian real / USD $40.2 million, including the acquisition of three additional diesel LRVs.

According to CBTU, the project will have to be approved by Brazil’s Ministry of Cities as well as seek financial backing from the Ministry if the development scheme is approved.

In summer 2015, the new 17km route called the Purple Line was approved connecting the arterial BR-101 road to the new Greater Natal International Airport.

The line, approved in a study by the CBTU’s Multiannual Plan, was estimated to cost 249 million Brazilian real / USD $65 million.

The Purple Line includes 10 stations with 5 train carriages and total capacity for 15,000 passengers per day.

Planned stations for the Purple Line include:

  • Greater Natal International Airport
  • Industrial park Extremoz
  • Public Park São Gonçalodo Amarante
  • Lagoa Extremoz
  • Integration terminal Soledade
  • Main shopping centres in Natal as well as tourist areas.

“Any new infrastructure developments in the region are good news. The addition of the Purple Line was a real benefit to Natal’s rail transit, connecting residents and tourists with the key areas in the city, as well as the airport. The new extension proposal would make commuting around Natal even more convenient and in turn attract more visitors to our beautiful city.”
