‘City of Sun’ becomes the new ‘Sunshine State’ as Rio Grande do Norte emerges as the Brazilian Florida

Dunes-Beach-NatalWith more than 3,000 hours of sunshine every year, it’s no wonder that Natal has been named the ‘City of Sun’. Situated in the North-East of Brazil, Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte state, is home to some of the country’s most spectacular beaches and has become famous for its plethora of dune buggy rides that take place on a daily basis. Due to its natural beauty, sense of adventure, and superior quality of life, Rio Grande do Norte has started to be compared by many to Florida, and is becoming known as the new ‘Sunshine State’.

According to travel agency CVC, regardless of the season, the North-eastern cities have been at the top of the list of destinations for Brazilians’ to visit for over 10 years. Today, Natal ranks as the 4th most sought-after domestic destination, with the stunning coastline, array of water sports and relaxed atmosphere offering everything that its American counterpart could and more.

One important comparison between Rio Grande do Norte and Florida is the cost of living, which naturally impacts the expense for tourists. The latest data released by Numbeo.com shows that whilst there are huge similarities between the two destinations, the overall cost of living is at least three times cheaper in the city of Natal than it is in Miami.

Another profound difference is the price of a city apartment. Natal’s city centre price per square metre is R$4,268.50 (US$1,093) for a prime location whilst in Miami the corresponding price is US$3,498 (R$13,661), at least three times more costly than its Brazilian equivalent, according to the same data.

Award-winning Brazilian developer Ritz-G5, whose projects are based in Natal, believe that the comparisons being drawn between Rio Grande do Norte and Florida are helping to attract visitors to the region.

Luiz Fernandes, CEO of Ritz-G5, explains,

“In recent years Rio Grande do Norte and Natal have become beautiful must-see hotspots for both domestic and international visitors. Sharing many of Florida’s alluring qualities that holidaymakers are looking for, but with a significantly lower price tag, the Natal region in particular is on track to become a popular alternative to its US counterpart, subsequently gaining a more diverse tourist population.”

And it is not just Brazilians who have noticed the similarities between the two holiday hotspots, with a new survey released by the Ministério do Turismo (Ministry of Tourism) showing that 2014 was a record breaking year for Brazil, welcoming over six million international tourists, with almost 700,000 visiting from America.

During last week’s Thanksgiving celebrations many Americans will have consumed a Turkey based feast whilst surrounded by family and friends. However, a recent report from Switchfly shows that those taking the slightly less traditional approach spent the day on the beach, with Brazil ranked as the number one international Thanksgiving travel destination providing ocean views, sunshine and an unparalleled level of relaxation.

With a laidback lifestyle guaranteed to lead to a superior quality of life, Natal offers both an affordable cost and better standard of living for both its working and retired population, as well as the increasing number of tourists flocking to its golden sands.

As Luiz Fernandes concludes,

“Natal is definitely a destination for the future, the ‘new Miami, and as its popularity continues to increase so too will the strength of its residential market. We can’t wait to see it reach its full potential!”
